More surface area for better heat rejection.
Thought it was easier that way.

Good grief! It's not that hard to get that little nipple in there, this dude was overthinking here.
My two favorite similar repairs (using nipple only) that I have made was when my uncle was using the cond. for a table saw to build a dog house, lucky for me he only went thru the top row.
The other was when my kid was showing off his bow an arrow. Up with the arrow and down into my outdoor unit. in middle of winter a few weeks after Christmas.

I had one where a drunk guy emptied both barrels of his shotgun through the coil just to see what it would do. It was time for a new unit after that.

Worst one I've ever seen was when a 1 HP condenser fan broke its mounting base and chopped through 6 tubes in the coil.
That emptied a 700 pound rack pretty quickly.
Did some ugly work there, but I managed to avoid using elbows!!!
