Gas Fireplace - delay in flame ignition

My gas fireplace is turned on by a wall switch, but there is a delay from the time I flip the switch, until the flame is ignited. It is now over 1/2 hour before the flame ignites. The wall switch is a regular up and down type lite switch. Any thoughts on what the problem could be?
    Thanks

    Exclamation danger!

Shut it down, turn off the gas and call a pro to service it! Delayed ignition can be explosive!
    Shut it down now!

    Exclamation

turn off the shut off valve you are going to call a professional , now.
My company had a similar servic call except the man had called after it caused the glass to fly all over the room... and there were criminal charges involved.

    not good for anyone

Thanks for your replies. It turns out it was just a worn-out switch on the
wall. I replaced the switch and it works just fine now. There was no danger
    of explosion.

You still need to get that Fp checked out by a pro. The symptoms reported could mean a dirty pilot leading to low thermopile output. Don't take the chance and think you're saving money. Get it serviced now. They will need to check a lot of things such as gas pressures, valve resistance, wiring resistance, etc.
