Got a lil spooked this morning
You know, it's seldom I'm left with a loss for words, and it's also rare that I'm truly weirded out.
I'm sound asleep in my bed at 5am when my phone rings. Seeing the 414 number did not make me all that anxious to answer it (that's the area code where our dispatch is located), they tell me both of the boilers at West Middle School are down. Kind of surprised me since those boilers are some of the better running one's in the area, so I crawl out of bed, get dressed and head on out. As I'm driving there I'm going through all the scenario's in my head of what could be causing this.
I entered the doors by the loading dock, and as soon as I opened the door I thought I saw the boiler room lights go out, but since my van was still running with the lights on, and a few other lights in the area I figured it must have just been a glare off the door or in my glass's. As I walk into the boiler room, I flip on the lights and walk down the metal stairs. I heard a sound, can't really explain it other than something moving in the room. Figured I probably knocked something when I walked in, or something under the stairs shifted, but didn't pay any attention.
I walked up to the boiler and asked it what it's problem was and why did it drag me out of my bed... yes... I talk to equipment. Sometimes I ask it questions, sometimes I just talk to it... other times... well lets just say it seems some of the equipment likes it when I talk dirty to it. Back on track... Neither boiler was running, and that's very odd, I mean the odds of 2 boilers going down are pretty slim. As soon as I opened the control panel door on the boiler the contactor snapped and it started right up. As I stood there, head cocked to the side much like a dog when you're talking to it I heard a few clanking noises... sounded like another relay making or something like that... but it came from an area where there's nothing electrical.
So the boiler is running away like nothing is wrong, I shut it off to make sure it'd start again... sure enough, it did. Now at this point I'm almost frustrated, nothing is worse than intermittent problems. I called down to the energy plant and had them switch the lead boiler to the other one, and with out even getting near it, it took off and started up. As soon as I hung up the phone I felt the hood of my jacket shift and the right arm of my coat moved, kinda felt like someone bumped it. Now I'm not a tiny guy, and this coat is kinda fluffy much like it's owner, so it's not odd to bump into stuff... then it dawned on me, I didn't move.
At this point I was a bit confused, but had that uneasy feeling. I got my focus back and walked over to boiler 1, shut it off, then turned it back on to make sure it'd start... it did. I tried that one more time, and just as I flipped the switch off I heard a racket come from one of the tunnels (there are 2 tunnels that basically go under the whole school, and you access them from the boiler room). It I flipped the boiler back on, then knelt down by the hole to turn on the light and see what caused the noise. Of course none of the lights worked, that never surprises me since the custodians never go in them, they never make sure the light bulbs are good. I walked over to my tool bag and grabbed my flashlight.
I don't know why I thought someone was down there at the time, I mean it's a school, it's Sunday morning no one should be there. I crawl back over to the hole and shine my light around, didn't see anything. Of course you can't see much from the access hole so I hopped down into the tunnel (yeah, as I write this, I wonder why I did that too, hindsight is always 20/20). I shone my light around and didn't see anything out of place, didn't see any rats or anything that would cause a noise but as I was looking around the hair on the back of my neck and arms was standing straight up. It didn't feel like someone was watching me, but it sure felt like I was in the wrong place and it almost made my stomach turn.
I crawled back out, double checked the boiler, it was still running, grabbed my tool bag and headed up the stairs to get the heck outta dodge. I turned around at the door to turn the lights off, and when the lights went off in the room, I could see the lights in the tunnel I was just in were on... Hippy tree huggers be damned, I wasn't going to go turn them off to save energy! Needless to say I high-tailed it out of there pretty quick and got back into my van.
I called the energy plant to let them know both boilers were running, and in talking with Bob down there, he tells me both boilers shut off at exactly midnight... I don't know why they chose midnight, or why they both shut off then. He asked what I found wrong there, after making him promise not to think I was nuts, i told him what went on... left him speechless too.
I know I have wrote some odd posts before, and I know some of you may think I'm a bit weird (even before this blog), but I'm telling you, something very not right happened this morning at West, stuff I can't explain any of, and despite only getting 2-2.5 hours of sleep before I was called out... I'm more awake now than I have been in a long long time...
Anyone else have effing weird stuff like this happen to them?"If you call that hard work, a koalas life would look heroic."

That's interesting stuff. That was a pretty cool story. You should research that place and find out if others had experiences there.

We used to do some state mental hospitals years ago. When we would have to work in the sub basements or dimly lit mechanical rooms it was creepy...
Now I will admit to sneaking up to guys and scaring the crap out of them
but they did the same thing to me

I'd be the 1st one whacked. I'm as curious as a cat but I might get stuck in a tunnel, kinda like the kid on Willie Wonka that got stuck in the chocolate lake tunnel.

That is a classic example of equipment demonic possession as described in the HVAC bible under title "Boilers, passages 12-3"
Next time try blessing it with a little holy water.
