    Should we? Of course. Will we? Eh, probably not without some form of planet-wide totalitarian governance...

    ..and we all know that the Federation (Star Trek) is not exactly all it's cracked up to be, but to do something that big and to have it work and be viable, it would be much more possible with everyone on the same page.

    Now I'm not advocating "one world" governance or anything, I just don't think that enough of us are past a lot of the petty squabbles we inherited from our fore fathers to allow truly private entities (Tesla/SpaceX is heavily subsidized) to go wheeling about in space.

    Should start with asteroid mining first, and maybe a permanent moon base before trying to go all the way to Mars. Something people can profit from is much more likely than just another ape planting a flag on a taller mountain. I just don't think fractional reserve banking has the legs for another cold war-esque spending spree.
