Thread: Cat in the duct

    Cat in the duct

We have a large Maytag/Nordyne package unit. The variable speed control on the blower motor fried sometime overnight, and I called my installer. He is a great guy, and came out on a Sunday afternoon to see if he could fix it. Unfortunately, he did not have the necessary parts.

Anyway, while he had the panel off the unit, our cat apparently entered the unit and got into the ductwork. We did not see him and had no idea that he was in there until about 90 minutes later when I heard meowing, but could not find the source.

Finally my son saw one of the vent grills move. The cat was trying to push it up. I removed the grill and the cat climbed out, all 20 lbs of him (he is a BIG cat). The vent he climbed out of is at the opposite end of the house from the unit.

This is just my luck. The system is less than a year old. There is a good bit of flex duct, and that cat has sharp claws. I have no idea what kind of damage he may have done.

Thank goodness the installer was not able to fix the blower!

If the cat was covered in dust, it saved you money on duct cleaning. If you could train cats to crawl through flex duct, you could start a franchise business.

I would have left it in the duct work.

That is one naughty, bad-ass cat. Can you post a picture of him? Is your HVAC technician coming out soon to inspect and repair?

My installer is coming out to fix the blower and check for damage this morning.

He laughed when I told him about the cat. He told me that he has driven off with a cat in his van before; now he keeps his doors closed.
