Your right it is vague. There really is no answer that will fly 100% of the time. At the very minimum you need to make sure the motor is the same hp, and size. Beyond that I suggest calling the inspector if you need to pull a permit on it.
In WA state there is specific rules for HVAC.
I was told that when replacing a blower motor it had to be OEM and not a generic.
There is a like in kind statement and the definition is vague.

And yes, all is the same on the generic motor EXCEPT the speed connections/leads.

I interpret it as long as the ratings are the same, then you're good. Sometimes things have to be altered though. Technically we can't add any components, like fan cycling or speed controls, or put in a 40 amp contactor to replace a 30 amp, but they aren't gonna know about it. We need to be able to do that stuff to do our jobs.
