Malware
Not really sure if I picked up some malware, or what's going on. But I need a bit of guidance on the best route.
First off, by computer standards, this one is getting up there. I think it's about seven years old, running on Vista. Been very trouble free through the years, but little stuff keeps coming up now.
Here are the clues to the problem that popped up a few days ago, maybe there's a guru or administrator out there that will recognize what changed:
1) If I go to make a post whether it be a simple reply, reply with quote, or a new post, the window for the post has a light blue background. Which I've never seen before.
2) When I open the window for a post, there is no tool bar for things like italics, font, color, etc.
3) If I click on 'like this post', nothing happens.
4) Although the emoticons are displayed, if I click on one to put in a post, nothing happens. But I can do something like type grin with the colons, and the emoticon displays.
I have logged out then back in to the site two or three times with no change. Also re-booted the computer a few times.
Ran Microsoft's security malware sweep and it found and repaired two files out of about a million that were corrupted with a known malware.
Probably should start shopping for another computer anyway, but it is my nature to keep things running as long as possible.
So anyway, any input is appreciated.
After all, nobody is getting a 'like' until this is resolved. Not because I don't want to, it just don't work no more no how.

something changed in the site software. im not sure what but i think it has something to do with the Google APIs. I couldnt make a LIKE happen unless I enabled the google APIs in my ad blocker. As it is, I can make a post, but none of the formatting will stay - something as simple as making a hard carriage return to make a double space - it's like I never made it.(carriage return made here) something changed

I have lost the carriage return line space function as well. I wonder if one of our recent spammers has left us a worm on the Penton server?

Just a thought. Go to your "tools" dropdown, go to "compatibility view" and add the site. It may or may not fix your issue. If it doesn't, just undo it.

Hey everyone,
we we haven't made any changes here on HVAC-Talk recently. Can you please give me some more info on these changes that you're seeing please?
What at browser are you fellas using? If it's internet explorer version 10 or anything below, we are really not able to provide much help as IE has been discontinued by Microsoft. They are no longer supporting its quirks and neither are we able to.
cheers,
robb

I'm on Chrome, and did see the prompt that Microsoft will not be supporting it in the near future. Ironically, that prompt came about one day after I saw the problem in the OP. So I don't think those two things are related in my case.

Can you please humour me and delete your hvac cookies as well as your browser cache to see if that resolves the issue?
cheers,
robb

Windows 8.1 64 bit Firefox 44.0 (says 'up to date') happened about a week ago. I have NO carriage return function even though I format it as such. I lost the LIKE function until I enabled the ajax.googleapis.com web site in my ad blocker Edit - it's gone again, no matter what I enable
Nest is POO!!
-
Also: when did you first note this issue?
-
Ahhhhhh ha! We can not assume responsibility for site behaviour if you're using an ad blocker of any type. Additionally we don't have any say over what the Google api likes or otherwise I am afraid
-
i would think you have SAY if the site loads it. in addition, the ad blocker prevents me from getting all the bugs and worms you all let in with the forced advertising. also, as im not the only one with an issue, you cant foist the problem on me alone. i logged out. cleared cookies. (carriage return entered here) no LIKE function

i turned off the ad blocker. AHHHH haaa! same problems

Thank you! We are continuing to try and figure out what's going on. Your report is appreciated!

No problem
Test of carriage return in tapatalk
Edit - works!
Sent via ESP...

I've got a 2008 Systemax Core2Duo machine, and it just works great. I updated from Windows XP to Windows 7. I think Vista is OK, but less than 5% of population is using it. The best thing about Vista and 7 is the rescue disk that you can burn with their maintenance software. I also use an external drive to do a system backup. Did you try doing a System Restore to an earlier date before the problem started?
IMHO Windows XP was the best operating system ever. I wonder how MS is going to force people off on Vista and 7 since you can do a system restore from the rescue disk.

I'm running FF 43.0.4
No tool bar for font, attachments, etc. Just started before I went to bed last night.
-
Thats what I get also. And if I click on an emoticon, nothing happens.
-
FF43.0.4 Cleared cache and cookies with C Cleaner. Cookie threats with Super Antispyware. No ad blockers. Removed Ghostery after some issue a few weeks ago. This behavior is recent. I did also get a certificate warning for the site when using my Samsung S3 native browser on Friday...

For everyone that is having issues please report the browser you are using. Do not report applications like TapaTalk or smart phones. Just want to know about computers right now.
I'm using FF and am having emotion icons issues. Carriage return is fine. Spell check is OK. No log in problems.
Robb.... this started after the right side ad was changed yesterday??

For a few days on mobile the site looks different and is unresponsive on chrome or Firefox. Only this web site. If I switch to desktop view everything works. (Edit: But looks like how Ex posted) I haven't ruled out my device yet so haven't brought it up till I saw this. I believe there were some recent Google updates that came in. The issue I'm seeing at HT started Friday.
