I HAVE A CHILLER THAT HAS SPRUNG A REFRIGERANT LEAK ON THE EVAPORATOR .. THE LEAK IS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE SHELL TOWARDS THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE BARREL. IT IS DIRECTLY UNDER THE A1 COMPRESSORS SUCTION INLET OFF OF EVAP. THE LEAK IS COMING FROM A ROUND NICKEL SIZED...WHAT APPEARS TO BE A HOLE THAT HAS BEEN FILLED. THERE ARE SEVERAL OF THESE AROUND THE BARREL UNDER EACH COMPRESSOR....I HAVE LOOKED FOR A DRAWING ON THE INSIDE OF THE BARREL THINKING THAT IT MAY BE A BRACE INSIDE THE BARREL SINCE COMPRESSORS ARE MOUNTED ON TOP. MY QUESTION IS WILL WELDING ON THIS SHELL DISRUPT THE TUBES OR ANTHING INSIDE?

The refrigerant side of that barrel is A.S.M.E. pressure vessel coded. Only certified welders using certified procedures can do repairs to certified engineering specifications. Local your local Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance people for direction on how to proceed.
