    Question for SMWIA Members...

    Hi,

I recently applied for apprenticeship with UA Local 525 in Las Vegas. I take the test in October. If I don't get in, I was going to apply to SMW Local 88. They both offer apprenticeship programs for HVAC servicemen/installers. However, I am also interested in refrigeration. I know the UA guys do a lot of refrigeration work, but I'm not so sure about SMW.

Do any SMWIA members here know if their apprenticeship programs offer training in refrigeration?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

If you get into the service apprenticeship, then yes.

However, you must hope to get sponsored by a company that does the work you want to do.

Out of the Detroit locals, they pretty much did away with service techs. There are still a few around, but most jumped ship and headed to the UA. To date we don't accept service apprentices, right now we're not accepting ANY apprentices for anything with this economy. Hell, we even lost the residential companies to non union, they just couldn't compete. ALOT of local cut throats. Good luck.
