You can get stats that will stage up by time.

For comfort its best if they do it by temp.

Only by temp. The stat itself is smart to figure the load needs on the system, and will fire off 2nd stage if the load starts reaching 80% capcity. (I may be wrong on %)

The two stage stat is going to give you a better comfort with longer run time, and cycling in between stages as needed.

A timer will time out 1st stage after X amount of minutes, and fire off into 2nd stage, and shut down when temps are met.
