    discus losing oil - where is it going?

    2db3-060e-tfc-200

    replaced with rebuilt from aircondex - old one didn't lose oil. This one is losing oil - where is it going is my question. Just installed today and have had to put in an extra quart to keep it going. Old one had problem with oil pressure. 404a system, system temps are okay - system in place for 5 years, I'm at a loss here. Pressures are good, amps are good, syntronic not tripping. Freezing properly, but the oil keeps going down without any visible signs of leaks.

    Actually my question isn't where is it going, but what outside of the compressor would be causing it? It's a rebuilt, buy what else besides the compressor would cause this losing oil?

    How much oil did you remove with the old pump? Is the new rebuilt pump ok or is it throwing oil? Normally I would say add oil untill the pump maintains an oil level, but with a rebuilt pump you could be sending it out on the discharge at a higher than normal volume.

    Thanks for the reply - the old pump was at the proper oil level on removal. Called the customer last nite and said the oil was 1/2 up the site glass running. Going there now, so weill post what I find. I'm just not used to having to add oil like this. Hopefully still 1/2 site glass.

    added another pint - jeez, why is this thing needing oil. Anyone else had this problem with a discus - and from aircondex? I'm sure they're a great company, just that I"M baffeled.

    My bet is a bad TXV

    I don't think you lost oil. I think oil stay in the evaporator, most likely a bad txv.
    Try this; shut the system down for five minure, start the system again, obsevere the oil sight glass. Is it full?

    Something broke in the old one - mechanically. Didn't lose oil tho. Would all of a sudden pull high amps, shake and shut down. This new rebuilt tho, have to add oil to keep running. system is a 20 foot double wide island freezer, 2 txv's, or 4 - damn, can't remember right now. /All 4 quadrants freezing properly.

    oil issue

    sounds like at some point you are getting liquid back to your compressor and washing out the crankcase at some point of operation. Check your superheat and if all is normal i would check it after system comes out of defrost. Possibly flooded start.

    You might try shutting down your condersor fans while letting the unit run and watch the head close, this will help drive any oil back to the comp. A few drives like this and results will be obvious in sight glass if to much oil.

    Compressors mostly pump oil due to turbulence

    Either from low suction superheat, or from liquid slugging (sudden intermittent low suction superheat? <g>), or from cold oil on start-up.

    So: are the crankcase heaters on all the time and working? Drawing amps?

    2. Is the compressor superheat both sufficient and steady?

    3. What happens to the suction superheat at start-up and just after defrost?

    The TXV could be sticking / 'notchy'. The CCH could be defective or otherwise not working.

    But let's move on - where does the oil stay? Intermittent oil loss will always return in an otherwise properly working system.

    So: either the oil return is poor or you are losing it faster than it can return.

    What does the oil look like in the sigh glass?

    Is there an oil separator? Is the compressor above the evaps?Suction accumulator full of oil, blocked return hole in u bend? INPUT INPUT
