This pump will do 20ft of head (lift)
You might try pouring bleach into the tank and letting the pump run the bleach through the discharge hose to help clean out the hose. Does the pump sit level on the floor? If it isn't then maybe the float switch's metal linkage is rubbing the plastic where it runs through the top and causing it to hang up.
Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.
Guys, I really appreciate the help I received so far with this problem, and I tried all of the suggestions, including a little bleach through the pump. The problem went away for about a month. Then, last night, the pump would not stop running, until I banged it pretty hard downward. I am guessing that helped. Anyway, as I mentioned before, there have been three times that it would not stop running, and each time I found some white substance inside. Also as I mentioned, this started happening soon after I had the upstair A/C replaced.
This time, I am posting pictures to see if anyone can tell me what this white stuff might be. Could there have been someting on the coils of the new A/C that is coming off? The white stuff does not feel greasy, and it seems to dissolve a little if you move it around in the tank. Thanks a lot for checking out my pictures. Tom
White build-up could be dirt, dust or a mix of water and possibly a coating that was applied to new evap coils washing off. I would replace the vinyl discharge tubing with 3/8" copper line that won't kink or sag over time. You would only need a small piece (appx. 4") of vinyl tubing and hose clamps to attach to pump discharge connection and copper. Make sure that pump is sitting on a level surface. If problems persist, have you considered adding a second pump so that each unit has it's own pump (if possible)? I would be worried if the single pump failed completely and both systems' condensate would end up on floor where pump is located--something to consider.

White substance is causing float to hang up.
Thanks for the information. I may consider that second pump if this problem continues. The A/C company is sending someone out tomorrow to see if there is something inside the coil box (paper, etc.) that may dissovling and draining into the pump. I hope they find something. I'll post the results. Thanks again. Tom
Well...the problem should be solved for now, and it was not the new A/C after all. The white gunk looking stuff was coming from the 10 year old first floor unit. The tech checked out the new unit in the attic, said it was a clean as it could be, and then blew out the line to the pump. Then he offered to look in the older unit since its drain line flowed into the other line, and he found some nasty looking stuff. Then he cleaned the area around that old coil to see if that cures the problem. I just never thought about it being the old unit since the problem started after we replaced the second floor unit.
Anyway, this company did a great job installing our A/C, and then did a great job today. I doubt they will be sending me a bill, but I will gladly pay if they do. Regardless, with the great job they have done, I will call them when it is time to replace the older unit. Thanks everyone for the help, and I hope this thread might help someone else diagnose their problems. Tom
