What is a cylinder bypass used for?

It is for letting off the gas, or unloading.
It's great to be alive and pumping oxygen!

    Bypass Control

Capacity or load control by reducing output capacity of the compressor.
Three head compressor with one bypass typically gives 2/3 capacity when operated.
Hot gas style and suction bypass types. Can be controlled by suction pressure or electrically by discharge air sensor (can't protect the compressor during low load conditions like the suction pressure type can)

Should be designed to prevent system from operating at low refrigerant velocity.
