What I do know, is that you are spending WAY too much time on the internet. I know all about it, I used to have the same problem.

And they are. There was a time when Superheat / Subcooling where not taught to service techs. I know you have heard the sayin's...

But when you are doing PM's on a building with 58 5-ton split systems, it's a hell of a lot easier to feel the suction, and look at the sight glass... You'll know pretty fast if something is not right...
Your doing a 58 5 ton split system PM on a roof by yourself???? Thats the problem, you need a crew to handle that.

By the time you finish, you gotta start over.

That would be the perfect job for me. It would probably take somewhere in the neighborhood of a month. 2 systems a day. Do it right. Otherwise, why do the PM?

If you don't know, then don't do. If you don't know and still do, then be prepared to pay someone else a lot to undo what you did and then do it right.

If you do know, then do. But do it right. Otherwise, you may not be doing it long.

    Just My 2 Cents

Installers should definetly know how trouble shoot start up problems and after 15 years if you can't do that then something is wrong. Wrong trade or not taking trade serious. As far as site glasses go. Why in the world would you use a site glass instead of checking SH/SC. Years ago I used sight glass because I didn't know how to charge a system. He does sound like a DIY.
Do it right the first time.
