Pricing opinions
Brand new to the site and home ownership, so please bear with me. I would like some opinions on the system that was proposed to me. House never had ac so the ac unit being installed from scratch.
Install also includes new thermostat plus wiring 4" Honywell filtering, and all misc..
System is a Luxaire
95%+ AFUE Acclimate 9.C Modulating (ECM) Gas Furnace (LP9C) Multistage, variable speed blower
15 SEER Acclimate R-410A Air Conditioner (AL5B) 3 ton
I have also been given the option of upgrading to an electric with ng backup heat pump or an 18 SEER AC unit.
Any comments are welcome and appreciated.
Is this a good, reliable system? Should I be interested in any other brands before luxaire?
ThanksLast edited by crslax9; 07-28-2008 at 10:27 PM. Reason: missed the rules.

No pricing allowed on site. It would be almost impossible for anyone to tell you if the price is good or bad. You have to see what you are bidding on.
Do it right the first time.

Please edit out your pricing, or a MOD will, its against the rules, Thank you.
I would consider the HP up grade, but not the 18 SEER upgrade.
The dual fuel upgrade will save you money in heating. The 18 SEER upgrade might save 20 bucks in a year, if its a hot year.

You have to join in order to post. The rules are pretty simple. I guess no-one reads this one: (well at least the ones that go ahead and do it anyway)
3. Home Owners - no pricing questions please
Only people who actually see your job can price it. Also, this is a site to promote the learning of HVAC technical knowledge and as such, questions of the type "$5,000 for a XXX system, is this a good price?" do not fit in with the theme of the site. Home owners, do NOT post prices.
Posts of this type will be deleted.
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

-Do you feel confident with the contractor?
-Was a load calculation done to calculate the equipment sizing, or did the estimator guesstimate?
-What thermostat is actually included? I think the mod stages on its own based on its own logic so it doesn't require a special thermostat, so if that's the case then I'd go with the VisionPRO IAQ from Honeywell for dehumidification on demand. Someone can confirm...
Good system if installed well... just like most other major brands. Luxaire is essentially the same product as York.
How many estimates did you get? 2-3 would be recommended for comparison purposes.

Yes, I feel confident in the installer. Has about 20 years in the business, and has done extensive work for the rest of my family.
I think the sizing was more of a guesstimate, as it was with the rest of the quotes that I received. They all came in with the same sizing.
As I said above, I received several quotes. The installer I am leaning towards is the middle of the road. Not the cheapest, and not the most expensive.
