Return Air

I have a three ton upstairs unit and a 4 ton downstairs unit. I peeked in the attic today to take a look at the ductwork and noticed the installer had connected the return ducts for both upstairs and downstairs. I just wanted to double check that this is ok... The return for upstairs and downstairs do not need to be separated right?

They should be seperate to protect the blower motors.

The static pressure of each,will vary along with the delivered air,when both systems run ,versus one with a stanard motor.With variable speed motor,they willkeep adjusting,to deliver the correct cfms,as one chngesthe other will ,and on and on.


If one filter gets very clogged,the others fan can rotate backwards,and then start backwards.


Have it changed.

I suppose hoping that the installer installed backdraft dampers in each unit would be asking to much.
