Old air furnance with newer heatpump

I have a 2400 sf house pluse 1200 sf finished basement. When I purchased the house 3 years ago, a new Carrier HP had been installed with the original 1988 furnace/electric backup.

The furnace still works OK but its a matter of time.

Should I look at a high efficency unit or go with a standard model?

Depends on your cost of gas, electric, and run hours for each.

For sure look into a variable speed fan in the furnace.
