Suction and Discharge Lines in the ground!!
I serviced a 5 ton split unit that was about 10 years old. The suction line and liquid line out of the house to the condensor runs into the ground and then using three 90 degree fittingsthey lines curl around and connect to the compressor. The air handler is in the attic and is all the way on the other side of the house.
Why would someone install those lines like that?
I'm thinking of removing those bends and reconnecting with a gentle bend both those lines.
Anyone have any thoughts on this subject.
Thanks
Sol

Do you mean underground?

Yes....linesets can run underground..
Need pics for the rest.I fully support the military and the War on Terrorism.
If you don't know, then don't do. If you don't know and still do, then be prepared to pay someone else a lot to undo what you did and then do it right.
If you do know, then do. But do it right. Otherwise, you may not be doing it long.

I have a customer that has a 7.5 ton split a/c, and a 4 ton split a/c that
have the linesets buried for over 114 feet. Units are in the basement.
Systems have worked very well. The 7.5 ton system is 14 years old, and
the 4 ton is 20 years old, maybe older. I did just replace the compressor
in the 4 ton unit, but only because a weld in the compressor leaked out
the oil.

What is the suction pressure?
What is it at the evaporator? (probably no port there)
What size suction line and what tonnage system?
How much superheat?
If there is a huge pressure drop in the suction line the compressor is working harder.
Will you increase the net refrigeration effect enough to offset the cost of working on the system?
