Bypass Damper with V/S AH...why?

I've been posting on sev diff threads, but wanted to isolate a question.

In a zoned sytem, if I have a V/S Air Handler, why do you need a bypass. It seems like an absolute waste of energy to dump air away from the conditioned space just to have proper airflow....shouldn't the A/H do that by slowing down?

A bypass damper is not a dump zone.

Your 16i, is not capable of what you want.

There are other units that are, but not that one.

sorry to be so dense, but then what is the purpose of the bypass damper?

what system would do what I want...I so pissed off I'm ready to dump the entire system and sell it on ebay..

You need a bypass to reduce noise when volume of air is high.

A 'smart control' system will slow the blower only so much (usually around 70% of design airflow).

There are only a few that can do that to boot.

As benny said. It reduces noise.
By letting the exccess air flow back to the return, instead of being forced through 1 small zone.

Some of your trouble, could be that it just isn't set up right.
Your contractor may have miss wired the air handler. Or maybe didn't set up teh dip switches right.

thanks for all your time guys. appreciate the info. with the cost of energy, it just seems like a waste to dump conditioned air to the return. but, i guess the good part is that the supply air will be colder so it won't run so long...lol
