    Return Size-Stamp face

for a stamp face return on a wall what is the rule of thumb for return air(square inches)? i have a unit that sits in a hallway closet above ground with the return air coming up from a stamp face return in the hallway(typical california track style). what size should the stamp face be?

Depends on how much air you need through it.

    1 to 1.5 sq ft per ton,depending on the grille type,for A/C .

In a cold climate, the furnace size may determine the grille size.

If you are having noise issues, try removing the grille,if you still have the noise it's from the equipment ,not an undersized grille.
