3 ton smaller than 2 ton???

I got a Carrier heat pump installed last year that was supposed to be a 2 ton unit (for downstairs). I just got another Carrier heat pump that is supposed to be 3 tons (for upstairs) but it is shorter than the 2 ton unit (same width and depth on both).

2 ton unit: model # 25HNA624A300
3 ton unit: model # 25HNA636A300

Can a 3 ton unit be smaller than a 2 ton unit???

yes some units have a double row of coils in the condensor and some have a single row

That's the reason,if you don't understand the double row coil,it's double thickness ,compared to single,so the three ton has more outdoor coil,in a shorter cabinet.

Cabinet size isn't always indicative of size. I've seen small, large-tonnage units before.

No, those are both 16 seer heat pumps and yes the three ton is shorter

The model number tells you the capacity.
See the 24 before the A300 in the first one?
See the 36 before the A300 in the second one?
That is capacity in BTU/hr times 1000 so you have one 24,000 btu and one 36,000 btu condenser.
One ton of air conditioning = 12,000 BTU/hr....or the amount of heat it takes to melt 2000 pounds (one ton) of ice in 24 hours.

Size changes. Believe the model number for capacity.
