    Unhappy Poor little Goodman

I was tearing out this 3.5 ton system and thought I would snap a few pics.

Just an average crappy custom home install in the DFW area of Texas.
Single 18" return duct connected directly to the bottom of the furnace.

I wonder what size the duct effectively was with the blower assembly basically sitting in the end of the duct?

Hmm, sooted up vent pipe on a 80% natural gas furnace, wonder what caused that?

I guess that explains the soot...

There were 5 of them popped all the way off, at least 2 more were popped, but still hanging on like Florida ballot chads.

Looks like their regular service outfit "fixed" the tripping rollout switch problem in the past.

They applied the same "fix" to the other furnace in the house too!
We were only there to replace the upstairs system, but I think we will be badk for the downstairs system real soon.

We put in a 4 ton Trane XL16i with a 80k XV80 furnace, Aprilaire2200 air cleaner, slab coil, plenums and some additional supply and return. I had to pull off to run a couple of service calls, so didn't get any pics of the finished install.
If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.

Just curious... did you guys add anything to the return side of the system?

Yeah, an Aprilaire 2200 air cleaner, return plenum, and an additional 12" return duct to the master bedroom suite.

The 18" return duct wasn't really a big problem for the old system, the real problem was how it was connected to the furnace. There should have been a return plenum so that air was being pulled through the full size of the opening in the furnace.

This type of installation has been the norm for many companies in my area for a long time, but I'm told some of the towns in our area are starting to fail installations that just have a duct tapped into the bottom, or side, of a furnace with no return plenum.

Hell, if it was 6" from the blower it may have been ok, lol.
In that model of Goodman furnace, GMP075-4, the bottom of the blower assembly is less than 1" from the bottom of the furnace!

The thousands of GMP furnaces that were installed in my area are a great for us. They have, by far, the highest HX failure rate of any 80% furnace I've ever seen.$$$$

That's what happens when you you sell to anyone with cash and a way to hall it off. It should be against the law.
