    At The Unit

Ducts leak and return is negative pressure.
Do it right the first time.

If the return ducts are sealed,at the grilles ,so you can have much more surface area ,which will allow for better filters without as much pressure drop.

But never seen a system with air tight returns. I think it would be risky.

Filtering at the grille makes it easier to change the filters (in most cases)

Your are filter the equipment and the supply air, just keeping R/A clean will not help if air is being introduce down stream of filtering.

At the grills is the best IMO(where mine are personally), unless you go with a media filter at the unit. Like stated, static is affected, so needs to be checked.
If everything was always done "by the book"....the book would never change.

"if air is being introduce down stream of filtering" you have other issues that should be addressed. Cheers.
