Help! AC down Decision needed tonight
Brand new to the board. Hope y'all can help. I live in Texas Hill Country. Already had 15 straight days of record breaking heat (99) looking for 100+ in July in August. 22 yr old Lennox heat pump finally died. My wonderful AC guy has worked on it twice this week, gets it running and then it goes again. He's now looking for a used fan motor in his shop (just got new one over a year ago) to help me out until I can get new unit installed. He installs American Standard and Bryant, but prefers AS. Just gave me brochures as he left. Now the ?s: How big? I've got 1200 sq. ft 8 ft ceilings downstairs. (upper unit working fine, cross fingers) Can go 2.5 or 3 ton. Any suggestions? Probably looking at "Premium line" on both heat pump and indoor unit. Very confused though. Too many options. A couple of them in the lines still use R-410A which I thought was being phased out. Is the "Ultimate" line better enough to justify cost difference? Thanks so much for your help.

Its R22 that is being phased out.
Your HVAC should do a load cacl instead of guessing.
Top of the line is usually 2 stage. 2 stage is for comfort.
Whats your comfort worth to you.

R-22
Sorry my mistake. Should I be worried that American Standard's top of the line unit only uses R-22? Yes, AC guy should do calcs, but....he's a one man (not counting teenage sons) operation and going sun-up to sun-down now. Working in my repairs between new installs and everyone else's motors going out. He installed new unit on renovation upstairs 9 yrs ago and has been great about coming out since to work on old unit. So....oh, and it's a tiny town and I only have so many options. I do trust him though and that says a lot.

Boat?
Boat? What boat? Am I missing something here?

I wouldn't be concerned about the 19i using r22.
Twilli is looking for a wife, and wants a wife with a boat. Orhe'll settle just for a new boat.
Humor left over from another thread he was posting in.

If you trust him then let him make the size decision as he has the experience with you home and his equipment.
I'd go with a R410A system as R22 is already expensive and will only get worse. It's like the price of gas going up but only faster.
The higher end units usually come with options that give you greater comfort with staging.
Use the biggest hammer you like, pounding a square peg into a round hole does not equal a proper fit.

Sounds like you found a contractor you trust. That's more than alot of home owners have, I work for a Lennox dealer, and have no problem with American Standard equipment, I, would however go with the 410-A unit.

She might want to see the house, too. Can you include a picture of the Coleman? I mean the Rheem with a Coleman sticker added on it.
