Return air for two storey house

    Hi,

Quick question. In a two storey house with returns on each level (basement, first floor, second floor) would it be advantageous to damper them so that in the summer only the 1st and second floor returns are open and in the winter only the basement and first floor returns are open? I would obviously have to size them so that two of three returns have enough return capacity for the whole system.

Is a basement, 1st, and second floor return recommended, or will one large return on the first floor suffice? (the stairs are an open design and go from the 2nd floor to the basement). Just weighing my options.

I am located in Toronto so it gets fairly hot in summer and cold in the winter.

    Thanks.

If all returns are open to an open area/stairwell,then it could be advantage.

A 3 zone, two stage heating and cooling system, like Infinity ,would be better.
