A fully matched 13 seer system, even with a fixed orifice, will indeed give you a 13 seer rating. My equipment will actually reach over 14 seer without the addition of a TVX.
That being said, a TXV is a good thing, add in a variable speed motor and we are now starting to get comfy!I need a new signature.....

Many things can be done on paper that don't exist in the really real world. IMHO this is one of the few ways Goodman can degrade itself. Do they even have anything on paper for their reasoning behind sticking with the piston?
The only reason I can think of is if you have an evaporator that failed on a 30 year old "beer can cold" compressor. If you correct the charge...it will die.

I don't recall ARI having Goodman rerate any or those units.
Some other manufacturers had to rerate some of their units.

Thanks again for all the feedback. The contractor is going to come out and perform a leak check on the existing system. If I buy anything new, they'll waive the cost.
With that in mind, I had a follow on question. They're quotting me Lennox units for the total replacement option. Can anyone give me an opinion of these models...
13ACX-048-230 and CH33-48C
XC13-048-230 and CH33-50/50C
They're both 13 SEER. The first one has a five year parts and one year labor warranty while the second up the compressor warranty to ten years. The second system is supposed to be quieter as well but that's not really a big deal to me. As expected, the second one is more money.
Any feedback on these systems?
Thanks!
