You should change both with a matched pair.

I had an experience with a home warranty co. I had a service call on an old unit with a bad compressor. The owner had just baught the place and told me she had baught a warranty. Long story short,(after me and the owner both being put on trial by the co's rep) they wouldn't cover the unit because of pre-existing conditions and lack of maintainance from the previous owner. As she put it...I baught a warranty for nothing!....My advice....Take the $1500 offer and put it towards a complete new system and ductwork. Who knows what mold and dirt and bugs might be lurkin inside the unit and ducts....YUK!
