    5/16 liquid Vs 3/8

    Old condo had a 30 yr old Trane 1.5 ton HP

    5 /16 and 5/8 lineset , cant measure length but id guess atleast 80 feet long , 2nd story

    Im installing a Thermal Zone 1.5 410

    This gonna work ?

    Rheem products are OK with smaller liquid lines but that's a long ways. At a glance probably be OK.

    Agree.
    It will "work" on a 1.5 but don't expect the eff rating your after.

    We used to reuse the Lennox RFC lines on occasion Lennox support said it would work if coil volume was similar
    or smaller, and it did, but I'm sure mrkelly is right.

    Not to go off topic.
    You could actually use an RFC liquid line.However,the "trick" back then was to remove the small cap tube or restrictor from inside the condensing unit it worked with and rig it in front of the RFC line and remove the expansion "device" from the new ecoil.The actual "line" itself was never correct to "function" as a metering device as many thought,Still,a bad idea to use them.

    Be sure to open up the end of the line after you use your tubing cutter. I have had the same situation. Got a call on an American standard Heritage 14 with a small liquid line like that. It was a 3 ton heat pump. Seemed to work fine. Subcooling and superheat was right on. Coil delta T was right on.

    The 5/16" tubing should work OK if you have enough subcooling at the unit to account for the line pressure drop plus the loss from static lift to the second floor. Here I used the Tecumseh line size app, assumed 100 ft equivalent length and 20 ft lift.

    Basically,you will have to stack the cond in order to get flow so little higher head psig will be "acceptable" in the real world.

    i have several apartments that are 1.5 ton r-22 units that have 1/4 liquid lines and are 3 story lift with about 225feet LL they run fine. the apartment owner doesn't want to go 410a so idk how they would run like that. replacement of those linesets is 100% out of the question.

    R410A will work better then the R22 units do. R410A requires less volume then R22.

    My 1 chart shows a max LL of 240'(TEL). using 5/16.

    ITs stuipid, they ran all the line sets in 4 inch pvc under the slab from one end of the apartment complex to the other, its 5 units long and 3 stories high, so its probably at least 200 feet. the head pressure difference between the units with far line sets and the close ones is about 75psi. in the same conditions.

    75 psi diff between units? There's something else at play here. IF the only diff between unit is the LL length, 75psi is out of line.

    I'll bet dollars to donuts those units with higher discharge pressure also have a lot more subcooling as well. The liquid line pressure drop and equivalent temperature loss will tell you that.

    Tks ice, i was looking at 5/16 not 1/4. Now my chart shows only 100' for 1/4 w/18,000btu.
