I'm just curious as to why a non-rocket propulsion method (most likely based on magnetic levitation) hasn't been tried. Yes, I know it's a massive infrastructure investment (about 10B), but it promises to bring the costs of launching bulk objects into space down from tens of thousands per kilo, to under $100 per kilo. StarTram seems to be a promising concept and the technology is already available.

"Estimates suggest that building a passenger-capable Startram would require 20 years and a construction budget (ignoring inflation and overoptimism) of about $60 billion."

Nobody is going to jump into something like this with both feet. We need something else to lead up to it, like, say a hyperloop. Then we need to do a multi-million dollar study. Then we have to do a proof of concept demonstration.

In order to make all this happen, we need a champion and public support.

And if the government is the major player, we should expect to spend at least 300 billion dollars before the first practical, reliable launch into space is achieved.

Falcon 9 second stage released a cloud of oxygen, which surrounded the first stage.

First stage combustion was probably accelerated in a fashion similar to these examples:
