It is now raining, so I'm despairing of EVER seeing the contractor's face again. Meantime, I am looking into some of hte organizations and certification bodies that are involved in the HVAC field. I've heard about ACCA and NATE (we are basically screwed in our area on both of these counts). Any others that might signify a good company?

One last question about the heat pump operation. Is it normal to hear the startup sounds (kind of like a car engine trying to engage) for several seconds before the blower starts up?

Some Goodman and other air handlers use a blower delay-on feature to "pre chill" the coil prior to the blower kicking on. The "car starting" sound I'm not sure...when the blower spins up it can make a revolving sound sort of like a car starter. Any sounds you hear prior to the blower spinning up would likely be refrigerant flowing through the coil, which is a normal sound.

One thing about this area...30 miles doesn't sound like far, but coming up from that town to this is rare (although they may do it, didn't check). Don't know why.
