Carrier Infinity 19 Or 16 Heat Pump

Manual J test shows a 4 ton unit for my home. I live north of Dallas and have a 2000sq feet home. My home is tight and has high celings. The difference in price is not that much. I want to purchase the best system to cool my home and remove the humidity. I thought I read once that the 16 seems to remove more humidity? Any thoughts or which route I should go? I will also replace all the ducts and add another return.

    For humidity control the 16.

Its system capacity in first stage should be around 2.4 tons.
The 19's first stage capacity will be around 3.2 tons.

So the 16 will have the longer run time in first stage.

The 19 is still much better at dehumidification then your old unit and higher SEER.

In Houston the 16 for dehum. ,not sure which in Dallas.

here are the AHRI performance numbers using same air handler.

    1250419 Active Systems INFINITY 16 PURON HP CARRIER AIR CONDITIONING 25HNA648A30 FE4ANB006+UI 48000 11.80 16.30 47500 9.30 27800

as you can see, not a big difference and for hot humid Texas, the Infinity 16 may be your best bet. I am not real clear of the major differences other than the type compressor and the low stage. with rebates involved, are the prices close? you will note a little higher cooling BTUs with the 16.

    IMO

Since the 16 has a higher cooling BTU does that mean it cools better?

    cool better? humm..

in most cases, probably not. however, if your cooling load is borderline , then the additional 1500 BTUs might be helpful. But that's only an extra 3.25% above the 46,500. I would want it for Texas summers.

    48,000 - 46,500 = 1500 more btu per hour.

The 16 is a true 4 tons (48,000 btu). Couple this with the lower first stage capacity, I would answer "Yes, it should cool better for your situation".

    Good luck.
