From one brand to the next. could be several hundred, to several thousand BTU difference.
Have to look at more then just the efficiency rating.
A 13 SEER 5 ton brand X, may be 57.6MBH, while brand Y's 5 ton 13 SEER, may only be 52.6.4MBH.

Thank you, EverthingAir, you confirmed what I thought. Can you explain to me why Heil says there DX1400 is Seer 14 and Lennox says "up to" 16 for there XC15. I suspect that the actual effeciency depends on more than the AC unit itself. Is that true? I am also thinking that at the end of the day there are no guarantees of true performance except that having the "energy star" means that you are buying a product that is above many others?
Your help is appreciated.

On that note, I was curious. Do any manufacturers make their own coils?

There are some companies that do a test out which determines with reasonable accuracy the installed system performance. Technically it is a snap shot of performance at a give set of conditions.

I'd say most or all do. I've watched them made in Rheem's Ft. Smith factory, Carrier & ICP's Indy factory. Indoor coils aren't made in Tyler but the Spine Fin coils were done there. I was in Armstrong's old Bellevue plant, they were shipping in coils from Heatcraft/ADP for the outdoor units. The evaps are made in ADP's plant. UT makes A & N coils in Mexico as does York. Not sure if outdoor unit coils are made in Collierville or Mexico. Haven't seen a Lennox evap coil lately to see if they are made by ADP or Lennox.

Need to look at the AHRI rating of eveything you are looking at to know what you are getting. Besides the outdoor unit, which indoor coil makes a diff as does which indoor blower whether being gas furnace or air handler. For example, the XC15 3 ton can be 13.50 with a coil and standard blower. Or 16.00 with select coil/variable speed indoor components. On the other hand, with a 5 ton you may not get past 13 SEER even with variable speed blower!
And if oversized and cycles more than it should, SEER is effectively lowered!

The Heil equipment has the Same compressor , and Hopefully R410a ( Puron )
refrigerant , it's just that the quality of the companies that would install the Carrier System are probably better
