    Efficiency of current furnace?

I'm planning replacement of my current furnace, and I'd like to get some idea of my energy savings with a newer model. My current gas furnace is 18 years old, a Ruud model UGDA-125A-GR according to the label on the interior. 125,000 btu input with a pilot light.

Can anyone tell me what sort of output I'm getting from this unit? Thanks.

    About 100,000.

The real question is, how many BTUs do you really need to heat your house.

You might be able to use a 80,000 BTU input 90% and heat your house better, and for about 35% less.

A proper load calc can help to determine your savings, by eliminating over sizing and short cycling.

100,000? Really? I was under the impression that the older systems like mine were much less efficient, but that's 80% of the 125K input.

    Thanks for the info.

It will have a combustion efficiency between 78 and 80. Thats not AFUE like your new unit will be rated. If your new furnace is rated at 90% AFUE, you could have a combustion efficiency of 92%.

But even if it was. A properly size unit can save you more then the 10% an AFUE migfht show.

A duct at 150*F, loses more heat then a duct at 120*F.
The hotter the heat exchanger is the less efficient it is.
