Evaluating HVAC Systems Prior to Purchase
Must replace both a 2.5Tand 3.5 T HVAC system (gas furnace). I am attempting to educate myself in the process in order to prevent the purchase of costly equipment or add on's that are not necessarily better but are quote "name brands" when the counterpart (i.e. Trane versus American Standard) would function just as efficiently at a lower initial cost. I have quotes from RUUD, Trane, and Carrier. I also have Lennox on schedule. I haven't seen any dialoge on this site regard RUUD and would appreciate input. Also oppinions on add ons such as UV lights, air cleaners, humidifers. Is there an advantage on a two stage versus a single stage? Is the cost difference between a 13 SEER versus a 15 SEER recoupable in savings over a reasonable period of time? This is an excellent source and I am so glad I ran across beforehand!

let me start off by saying, way to do your homework! i mostly install lennox, and i could go on and on and on about why you should buy lennox, but the bottom line is that the install is done correctly you should have no problems. pick your install company not the NAME onthe equipment their installing. i would personally go with at least the humidifier and air cleaner. you can see some savings going two stage, and you should also see added comfort. the pros. on here can probably be a lot more specific than me.......so good luck

Ruud is a good line.
2 stage is for comfort, not for saving money in operating cost.
If your house is dry in teh winter. You can either get a humidifier. Or, look to see if you can tighten your house to reduce the amount of fresh air coming in your house.
4 and 5" media air filters can help to minimize dust in the house, and relieve some of the sysmtoms of allergies.
UV lights can work. But many of them need the bulb changed every year, and are used to cure conditions beyond their abilities.

Thank you for the response.... This gets very confusing for layperson and especially difficult to make a wise decision when the temp is 90+ and you just want A/C at any cost!!
