10 ton unit with a long line set
I installed a 10 Ton unit and the closest place available was 200' away with a vertical raise of 30' and 170' horizontal, I over sized the suction line from 1 1/2" to 1 5/8" and liquid line from 1/2" to 5/8". can someone tell me if I have to install anything on the line to make it work since I have no other closer option and I keep burning compressors because of low suction and compressor running dry of oil????
Please post any ideas or suggestions.Last edited by abcool; 06-02-2008 at 11:03 PM.

Check the IOM for piping details. That is ALOT of pipe and much juice to migrate. I would be concerned about washout and oil loss.

There should be a p-trap in the suction line every 20 feet of rise in a system with normal pipe lengths and sizes. With a bigger suction you'll have less velocity to bring the oil home, and may need to cut down on the rise between traps.
I'd be for a careful look-over of the whole system and find the places where the oil is sitting. Take a bucket if you cut into anything.God Bless the USA

double check that trap thing, always check with the manuf. A lot of them discourage them now-a-days and just make the suction line a bit smaller (to increase velocity)

I have 2 reverse p-traps one at air handler and 1 at condenser but not on the rise. I also installed a liquid line solenoid valve before the air handler.

the rise is 10' in basement and then horizontal for 70' another 17' rise and 90' to 100' horizontal in the roof where the cond unit is

hard to figure it out. you mean your condenser is above level of the evaporator?
Usual life of your compressor? Reciprocating? or Scroll?

simptoms are low pressure on suction line, almost 60 lbs of refrigerant and still cycling off for low pressure, the TXV bulb is placed on suction line but it freezes as soon as I start the unit
