Mercury Flame Safety Switch Obsolete
I recently found this while looking for parts. Has anyone started to stock up on these yet?
"NOTICE TO OWNERS OF GAS FIREPLACES 10YRS OLD: MERCURY FLAME SAFETY SWITCH NO-LONGER PRODUCED! Look in the bottom door of your fireplace for this part. The Mercury Flame Safety Switch has a distinct white oval shaped porcelain head. This part allows the pilot to stay lit and if the pilot flame goes out it closes the gas valve as a safety should. The reason for this notice is that mercury has been phased out and that part is no longer produced. The safety feature of the mercury flame switch is an integral part of your fireplace. Unfortunately there is no certified alternative to this part and when once it fails the fireplace would be inoperable. We estimate there are 150-200 Mercury Flame Safety Switches left in Ontario with over 5000+ needed in Canada. The current supply will be gone this upcoming heating season and we wanted our customers to know first. The reduction in supply and increase in demand will result in a hefty price increase for this part. If you plan to keep your fireplace we recommend you purchase a Mercury Switch soon. If you plan to replace your fireplace soon, please disregard this notice."

Good information natgastech, I was not aware those switches were being phased out. Still have a fair # of units in my service area that utilize those particular safeties.

some solutions out there
Regency apparently has a conversion kit for some of their older Fps that used a Hg switch. I inspected one recently where the switch burst spilling HG inside the Fp base. Reg. shipped a new valve and quick drop out pilot assy. at std. wholesale rates, which the homeowner paid to replace.
I've never seen these used in Heat&Glo fireplaces unlike the ad's claims.
Why would you put a $ part plus x amt labor into an old fireplace, whether std pilot or HG? In my case, they were selling and didn't want to buy a brand new Fp.
Will be glad when they are gone.

Keep the fire inside the fireplace.

good,worst flame safety ever

We had our customers buy the MFSS from No direct purchase links and then we install the part. Worked out well. Alot of people need them to sell their house/condo or they are stuck buying a new fireplace because they are not properly informed of their options.

Ok...I have to let you guys know that it is my company(s) that holds the worlds supply of Mercury Flame Safety Switches. I was buying them back after my post in 2008 in anticipation of everyones stock depleting. Now here I am in 2010 with a bunch left and looking to sell. Yes my companies have them listed for $$$ each which may seem expensive relative to the cost 2-3 years ago but what do you charge for the last parts IN THE WORLD?! I offer a reasonably priced alternative to replacing the fireplace ($$$$ for R&R). I am sure my competitors have told their customers that the part is not available when they know I have them. I try to provide customers with options so they can make an informed decision on repair or replacement. Please review my contact info if you need to reach me.
