Hey guys.
I wanted to bring this question up.
The question is, What tools should be supplied by the Company and/or by the service tech?

I recently started a new job doing service and maintenance with a Van. About a month later I was given a list of:
A: Tools supplied by Company
B: Tools supplied by Service Tech.
I'm scratching my head thinking if this right or wrong because some of these tools they want me to buy are not exactly "hand tools". I will never use these tools outside of work. Well unless i do some blue-mooning, but you get my drift.

Does anyone think these 7 tools a Tech should supply? They really seem like Company Supplied tools to me.

I went over the list ....and I am in agreement with you based on my own experience, and others I know in the trade.

On top of that, they shouldn't be trying to tell you what tools you have to buy, meaning they should just stick with telling you what they will provide and let you decide what else is needed.

The company I am with supplies 100% of what I use on the job.

I can tell you from MY experience that the leak det., pullers, scale, and pump were provided by the co. but every co's different.

What about the Torch Kit, Tank, and Tips?

Being a company owner I can tell you you're being set up.
As soon as there is some job or procedure you couldn't do because of some tool you were supposed to have watch out. There is a chopping block close by.
Being Union, plumbers really didn't need to supply many tools. Maybe a pencil. ruler maybe something else. A sheet metal worker had to supply a box of tools that maybe cost 2-3 hundred dollars. But what you are expected to supply so they can make a bunch of $$ is ridiculous.

My advice... Go Union. Only because you're getting screwed.
Auto mechanics supply their own tools at a huge costs but they are largely flat rate. It's to their benefit to have just what they will need to make the job kick a$$. I'll bet they aren't paying you flat rate.
With all those tools you could be in business.

That's just plain ridiculous, do they expect you to share all those tools with them, or maybe they can't afford them.

I supply a tool belt. Wrenches, screwdrivers, nut drivers, Allen set and a VOM meter. When something of mine breaks they replace it, with like or better. Anything else they can supply.

I did work for one company that gave you a $600 tool allowance every year (1980 $’s) for extras, that you owned. Not a bad deal.

I won't be any help to you....I already own all of those tools and then some. Use them all the time...every tool on my truck is mine....if I leave the company that truck will be empty. (ladders are the exception...those belong to the company)

Does anyone think these 7 tools a Tech should supply? They really seem like Company Supplied tools to me.

The scale, Nitro and Acetylene tanks..............should probably be Co. supplied.

The leak detector is kind of iffy............some will buy it, some won't. I think my Co. has a couple, but I've never seen them........I have my own.

The rest of it, yes, unfortunately, in the real world you're going to have to bite the bullet and buy some tools.

I own at least one of every tool on that list, as I would suspect the majority of people here do, I have doubles and triples of many of them.........I think the only tools they bought me were the Vac pump, ladders (I have a set of those too) and reclaimer.

I'm not an owner, I'm a union service tech.

BASIC hand tools is what we are required to supply. Most of us have our own meters cause we dont like the ones that were being supplied. But if it breaks the company replaces it.

There is no way in hell i would buy torches, a nitrogen tank, and a refrigeration oil pump. That would be a big red flag that this company is shady. Get the fack out of dodge. Ill bet they have techs buy this equipment and still charge the customer for the use of equipment that they didnt pay for, its suppose to be equally beneficial for the tech as it is for the company.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm going to talk with my Service manager and discuss this further.
I would def like to have some if not all of these tools for my personal use some day but, I don’t feel like buying all these for this company would benefit me in anyway except using a new tool (like most of you are saying).
