Hacks are the gift that keeps on giving
Found this a couple days ago, problem 55 degrees on first floor, 75 degrees on second floor, 82 degrees on third floor.
Row house 1100 square feet Philadelphia, PA 14 degree design temperature for heating 92 for cooling.
Now what do we have a 90,000 btu 93% condensing furnace with 3 tons of cooling. Return 8x14 with 16 x 20 filter cut out to 12 x12 opening.
8 x16 supply trunk running 3 stories with ceiling registers on the ceiling of first floor totaling two 4 x 10 side wall type.
I had to laugh at the return with two 7 inch flex ducts running 3 stories crushed behind a 2 x 4 wall. I have no idea how they managed to install two 12 x12 filter grills on each floor, must have crammed tees between the rafters going up. Either way no air flow in or out of any registers on the first floor.
There seems to be a common thread running through 100% of the hackery I see in Philly. Does anyone notice what that might be?

Why is it always the goodman that takes the rap.

I agree buford, I see hacks on other brands also, but nobody seems to care unless it is a Goodman.
But that is a pretty bad hack job.
Those who dance, appear insane to those who do not hear the music.
Those who believe, appear ignorant to those who do not know God.

damn, this is what and why i always lose bids! "goodman and flex duct!" and i get knocked for not using a media filter... SMH...

This cold here tomorrow will definately show all of the problem children around here. I know Monday certainly opened a lot of eyes.

The inspector said he wanted to see purple primer, I'll show you purple primer, says the Goodman who installed this. Boss says are you done yet we have 10 other installs to do today, yup no problem boss, all I have left is to hook up the dryer vent and screw on the yellow line that smells like rotten eggs no mater how hard I reef on the nut with my channel locks and vise grips. I should have this all wrapped up in 25 min. Boss says have it done in 10 min, k I'll just flick the switch and hope it makes heat until I'm half way down the street. Boss you may have to change your phone number and your business name so they can't track us down.......
Its not the unit its the install!!

The first pic, the grey wire? Is that a #6 wire powering that thing?

Yep, nothing like a cold snap in Philly, was on a roof yesterday, hack couldn't figure out Carrier RTU had a bad combustion blower. Sprinkler guy was going Ape **** with interior at 36 degrees coming into the weekend.
Picked up a pretty good customer with that call. Froze my ass off. Unit now has just about all new parts and a new venter, too bad the heat exchanger is just about done. I will be replacing this unit come spring. Love picking up customers with 16 older RTU's all in need of replacement.
I haven't advertised since 2007, not even listed in the phonebook. Love these low temps and the many poorly installed heat pumps. The new construction industry is like the hvac guys future full employment act crap installs abound.

I completely agree, in fact I am considering moving some of my purchases from Lennox who does not want to stock anything to Goodman who stocks everything at 30% discount to Lennox.
When Goodman first came into the market their heaters were crap, their cooling units ran forever but lost the paint in one season.
They have improved. However until Goodman (and they never will) stops selling to brain dead installers their equipment will carry this badge of the unit seeming to be crap.
Depending on my experience when I install one or two this winter, I may boost Goodman's reputation in the market.
Many years ago as a sub for a builder, I sold Goodman as a premium over Lennox, Carrier, etc. We charged 20% more for the equipment. Understand the GC had no access to any brand, and I was not going to install Lennox under his moniker.
In the end the GC asked us to stop doing such a good job because his other subs did terrible installs. One customer had us install a unit in his personal residence while his other installer hacked the same unit into a rental property. The guy signed off on both installs and later freaked when he got over to the rental property. We ended up doing a re-install to keep the guy happy.

No that is from the dishwasher and was attached to the pvc waste line by simply drilling a hole in the pipe. Not sure how this house ever passed the plumbing and electrical. Philly inspects for plumbing, electrical, foundation and framing. Hvac needs a permit but there is no formal inspection. Once the building inspector asked me what is all that white stuff on the duct joints? Mastic. Oh, never saw that before!

Where we are located, purple primer is not required yet, across the river it is. the only reason it's required is to verify a primer was used. Honestly, I believe primer is one of the smallest issues you'll find on most hack jobs like this.
If you get purple primer on your eye, does it turn purple too?
I've been fortunate to have a couple good and bad influences in my career. The good ones have driven me to be better, the bad ones have MADE me better by showing how not to do pretty much everything.
A trane employee who leads seasonal reviews/refreshed and many sorts of training lasses once told me to pay attention to my installs when I return to them in the future. Look for good and bad, make the good better and slap yourself for the bad, then fix it and never do it again.
