For the record, Kansas' guitarists were Kerry Livgrin (not sure I spelled that correctly) and Rich Williams. Kerry did most of the impressive guitar work as well as being the main songwriter for the band.
For me, there is Alex Lifeson and then everyone else. Hard to think of another who has as many textures and sounds as he does. But our favorites always depend on the backdrop that they play in front of.
Guitarists like Satch and Malmstien are somewhat impressive in a show-offy and pretentious way. If they only made music.
Kerry Livgren. Now a Christian Rock n Roller. I had a couple of his tapes.
Listen to Frank Zappa play a solo, he had a rule that you should never repeat a riff or hold a single note longer than three beats. His mind was always moving his fingers to a different variation riff after riff. ie: "Willie the Pimp".
