Duct system replacement...

Just curious, do you guys do many duct systems replacements?

Between the shoddy contractor low budget installs and general aging, seems the need for re-ducts would be fairly large.

How long do you see duct systems staying fully functional in the field?

Seldom replace them,often remediate air flow issues and seal them.


Mostly ductboard and/or flex here in Florida.

Some installed in the 60's still okay.

Only had to start from scratch on afew systems.
Most can be modified to work.

In Kentucky we do our share of duct sysytem replacements. Not generally due to age though. most age contributed damage is easliy repaired.

We replace them due to poor design/instalation or water and fire damage.

We use metal duct with flexible or hard pipe runs. No fiberglass in the airflow of our ducts.

you cant use duct board?

As said we fix what we need to as we install equipment. Sometimes its a hard sell as we are the "only ones that said anything about it". Around here most companies have no idea how to fix air flow problems let alone check it.

We use all metal ducts with metal runs.

There are no codes or regulations keeping us from using ductboard.

There is a very small amount in the western KY area.

At our company we are following the IAQ trend & I believe that blowing that fresh filtered air through a maze of exposed fiberglass before entering the living space can raise questions.

All ductboard I have seen in our area is pressed fiberglass with a foil jacket on the exterior. Seems to me they should line inside with the foil jacket also.
I am sure there are different types of duct board, just don't see it around here.

We use 26ga. or better sheet metal duct with reflectics bubble wrap & liner.
