    Confused Why does TX valve waterhammer?

    We recently installed an American Standard 3 Ton Heatpump system with airhandler. The indoor TX Valve occasionally produces a water hammer like sound, which last for 30 secs or so. It annoys the homeowner, certainly at night. We have replaced the TX valve, but no result. What could be the cause? The lineset is 7/8 x3/8 and is 40 ft long. Th system is charged with F22. Anyone any ideas? Thanks.

    In my experience, usually an over charged system, poor indoor airflow, or other condition that causes unusually high head pressure in the heat mode.
    I haven't run into one that does it in the cooling mode.

    The noise actually has to do with the check valve in the bypass loop around the TXV, not the TXV itself.
    If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.

    The noise is most likely the check valve seating during start up, trane made a magnet kit to help with the noise ( this kind of sort of works) the fix to this is pulling the check valve and installing a spring loaded check valve, if the unit has an extended warranty, you can recoup the cost, if not you will have to eat it.. the check valve runs parralel to the txv.

    Re: Waterhammer TX valve, This occurs in the heat mode, TX Valve has internal checkvalve, head pressure is 210 psi, no indoor airflow problems.

    the internal chk on that txv is to route the refrigerant through the other chk as it checks in the opposite direction...

    when the refrigerant is moving through the check valve, the steel ball is swirling around in the cradle instead of seating hard...the magnet kit sticks the ball to the side of the assembly

    Does it make the noise when it is running or right after it is shut off? I have had this problem right when the unit shuts off.

    these checks will make the noise during low load conditions....on start up mostly and pn shut down....the refrigerant presuere seats and backseats the steel ball inside of the check...trane does make a magnet kit...it kid of works...springloaded checkas are the only real fix...if you have an extended warranty, trane will pay if not, they wont
