Plastic or Metal registers best??
Are plastic or metal registers the best? Does it matter?

I don't think there's much of a difference. Most homes in my area use metal. And wood registers are becoming more popular with people who have hardwood floors. Just make sure the ducts and registers are the right size, that's more important than what the vent gills are made of. Some prefer one over the other, but I don't see much of a difference.

Plastic or wood are thicker material,so if replacing metal ones,the size likely needs to be increased,due to less open area to let the air flow thru.

increasing the size= increasing the 'boot', ie the transition piece from round to rectangular -- = $$
and, use the same throw pattern -- [provided the original was ok]harvest rainwater,make SHADE,R75/50/30= roof/wall/floor, use HVAC mastic,caulk all wall seams!
