Thanks everyone for the input. I knew it just didn't sound right. I don't think he is trying to scam me but rather he really believes it would work. He had been in the industry for years and is now semi-retired. I'm sure he was thinking he was doing me a favor and saving me big $$$. I'll look into replacing the whole unit by a licensed contactor that will ensure my peace of mind.
