Payne Heatpump fan
The house we recently bought (southern Indiana) has a Payne heat pump.
Prod: PH10JA030000ACAA
Model: PH10JA030-C
Serial: 2600E33018
This winter, out electric bil has been higher than I would expect with a heat pump. I've been paying some attention to the heatpump. At times it runs fine. Other times, it will seem to be running fine. The fan will stop and the unit makes a loud humming sound.
I have come to the conclusion that I need to have this looked at. I need to replace the entire system. The inside unit is a GE with a date code of 138 ot T38. Someone told me they thought it was made in 1971.
I am looking for an idea of what may be going on before a technician looks at it. Would it be best to have this problem addressed or hold out until I can replace the system?
Thanks
Jody

It sounds as if it is defrosting. Perfectly normal. I would get somebody out to check it out though, it surely won't hurt.

I can't see any frost buildup anywhere. When the fan stops, I can feel a lot of heat coming off the unit. For the past month, our electric bill was almost $400. How often should the heat pump come on and off?

Payne has a time/temp defrost. It will go into defrost cycle even if there is no frost but the coil is below freezing. This will happen every 60-90 minutes. I think the factory setting is 90 but a wise contractor in Indiana should shorten it. Sounds like you need a pro to check out the system and see why the high bill.

the 37 yr old indoor coil may have something to do with the high bills.
best to get it looked at and start planning on a replacement.
-
Its going into defrost as others have said.
That mismatch is most likely a lot of the high bill trouble.

Start looking into a new system...a fully matched system will treat you better than throwing money at the one you have currently
I need a new signature.....

Thanks for your help.
Thanks for the information. We have someone coming over in the morning to give us a quote for a replacement system.
A little while ago, I noticed that the thermostat was kind of loose. I bougt a digital thermometer and the temp at the thermostat is 80 even though the thermostat was set on about 73-74. I guess this would probably be another problem.

it could also be a head preasure controler cycling the fan off to maintain head preasure. If it is that old I wonder how the strip heaters are wired in? The outdoor unit needs to lock out when the temp drops to low outside as well and just let the strips run. post back the techs findings.

In heat mode, cycling the OD fan will not raise head pressure.
What OD temp do you consider too low. 10, 0, -10*F.

unit is in defrost probably . fancycling switch or head psi. control does not effect a heatpump in heat mode only in cool mode .

The techs all say to not to even consider fixing and just replace the system.
