It is 35 degrees here,My coil has alot of frost

I notice this yesterday and today.I thought that is was just from alot of moisture in the air. My heat pump has alot of frost,I mean covered enought,that the coil is all white, air can get thru it.Than it going thru a defrost,and it cleans again.It is all off.My timer is set for 30min and it is Goodman CPKJ60-1C.Should I go buy another OT senser,are move the senser lower to the colder part of the coil.THX Again

I'm confused about what your point of concern is.

Heat pumps frost up quickly when there is a lot of moisture in the air, and it is in the 30-45º range outside.
As long as yours is defrosting, I don't see what the issue is.

I've had this heat pump for awhile,and never seen it build up this much before.To me,it should go into defrost alittle sooner,because it is almost pluged.Solid white,and no air can get thru the fins.I just have a little concern.THX Again

If its set to 30 minutes, thats as often as it can defrost, certain weather conditions arent ideal for heat pumps, and they accumulate frost quickly, nature of the beast

Is the HP in the shade or does it have a tree over it or bushes up next to it?

Basically is it clear of all possible obstructions?

Does it sit in the shade?

Maybe its just me,but it is building alittle more than normal,before it will go into defrost.I think you are right,There a ls alot of moisture out there today.
I'll just keep watching it,as long it defrosted it that's what matters.THanks

Don't be too concerned, but keep an eye on it. Under those weather conditions, they do frost up. Even if it goes into defrost, and not all of it melts, don't turn it off. If it doesn't all melt off after a few cycles, you might want to have it looked at.

When a heat pump defrosts, it reverses back to the cooling mode, and also stops the outside fan. At that point, it needs a full refrigerant charge.

Was it cooling fine last summer?
Is your air filter clean?

if its holding your setpoint temp inside, i wouldn't woory about it the more time you go into defrost, the more you are using the electric heaters during the defrost period, the more money you will be paying on the utility bill. this is why i like demand defrost over 30 60 90 boards!! a demand defrost system looks like what you describing for a very long time before it defrosts. and its always humid in NC

Have you changed your air filter lately.
When was the last time you had it serviced.

There could certainly be something wrong if this has never occured in the past. However; the defrost cycly controls are about the only thing that are absolutely working correctly.

• Low outdoor airflow.
• Low refrigerant charge.
• Partially blocked outdoor coil.

These are some of the things that could be at fault. You really should have a professional take a look at your system to determine if any of these factors exist and why.

Is your heat pump set up off of the pad so that the condensate during defrost cycles can drain away properly?

Do you see any disfiguration of the lower section of coil fins on the outdoor coil? If so, ice may have formed around the bottom of the coil and may have crushed to lower coils.

I'm not familiar with a demand defrost without a timer, could you explain how it works please .

OP, if you see more frost than you are accustom to seeing, it's time to call "the guy" IMO.
