    I always look at it with the shaft pointing away from me and it goes away from the ring on the stator. Cant think of the name of the ring its been awhile since I've thought about that.

    The copper bar is the shading pole, so those who said the motor turns towards the shading pole were correct. Here's a good explanation with a helpful diagram:
