if you check 2 legs across 480 you will come up with 277, if that motor came off of a 3 phase 480 unit with single phase motors then they are 277 motors

Huh? When did that start? They changed the fundamental laws of electricity?

If you check across a 480V single phase circuit I would expect to see around 480V. If you checked either leg to ground you would get 277V. 277V is one 480V hot leg and a nuetral. 480V single phase is two 480V lines.

    Always a possibility.

A co-worker gave me that name as a CB handle after he found out just how many commercial building roofs I've been on as a service technician. I don't go up on as many as I used to, I mainly can be found in mechanical rooms nowadays working on/in/around chiller plants.

Yes, make sure you replace the capacitor and also the Rain Shield, if it has one existing!

Some of these motors have a certain frame size that will indicate shaft size!

Some have 1/2" shaft some have 5/8" shaft.

Johnstone Supply is pretty good with OEM replacements. They can UPS, if you pay by credit card, should you not have a account. http://www.johnstonesupply.com/corp/Default.aspx

AO Smith used to make a motor that included a rain shield, that was very dependable and versatile, with a 5/8" shaft, but you had to remove the electrical pecker head on some installs.
Fully agree with This. I use so many 1hp 1phase 460v condensor motors, I carry one on my truck, with a rain shield.
You want me to do what, with that thing!!!!!!

I know what you mean, I like mid spring inspections myself. I was in a refrigeration and air conditioning shop before I came to work for the manufacturer. No formal schooling, though the man that taught me graduated from Delhi here in NY, he took the refrigeration courses. At the end of my stay at that company I was doing most of the rack refrigeration and ice machine calls that came in. Now it's mostly chiller work with some roof top equipment thrown in when they need me. Very rarely do I do any refrigeration work anymore. I did have one ice machine that was used for comfort cooling, had around fifty plates that were 4'W x 8'L, I miss working on that one. The last bit of refer work I did was on a hospital morgue, no one could find a leak on it. Took me about 10 minutes to find it.

Ever go to that riverboat museum out in KC? Interesting, I thought.

Yep, that's the one. I was out there visiting my wifes family a few years ago and had the oportunity to go. It was dug up by some HVAC guys, probably what keeps it in my mind when the KC subject comes up. I think that The Discovery Channel did a program on it, interesting, what with all of the antiques that they have. I'm not into old stuff like that unless it has something to do with power transmission but the craftsmanship is incredible.
