I recently installed a Honeywell 24x24 Merv 10 4" filter of the type you described. It solves two problems for me:

  1. The "top-of-the-line" 1" Filtrete filter apparently was too restrictive, causing the blower to occasionally produce a brief "rushing" sound, which was highly annoying.
  2. The lower-end Filtrete and other pleated filters were so flimsy, they would make crinkling noises for 5-10 sec when the blower started and especially when it shut down.

I tried a bunch of different filters, and only the fiberglass filter and the Honeywell filter you mentioned work well in my system. So glad I read this thread.
