Best Heat Pump?
I'm going to be living in Fort Myers, 90's all summer long
Will a single stage heat pump work for me or should I get a two stage?
I'm looking at a Lennox XC-17 heat pump, I posted a list of many
Everyone has their preferences. As far as sgl stg vs two stg, one has to weigh cost difference against marginal comfort improvement and operation cost.
these are the minimum specs you should be looking for.
both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system.
15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF
best matching VS air handler
full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size
R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron)
scroll compressor preferred
electronic demand defrost preferred
thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature
staged backup heat strips
new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset
10 yr warranty on parts and compressor
you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc.
any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed.
My personal recommendation is Trane/AmStd, Rudd/Rheem, and Carrier/Bryant.
Depending on your location, I would not purchase a new system that did not have electronic demand defrost.
If you are in a true harsh coastal type environment, you should take this in consideration when making decision.

will you put your general location in your profile?
(or wherever it is to show up when you post)
as always, I like your specs for heat pumps.
and recommendations to check out ductwork
not only for sizing but leakage.

i agree with tigerdunes except i would look for a 10 yr parts and labor warranty. we are a Trane dealer here so. al. and any of XL systems come with the 10 yr. P & L warranty. thats XL 15i. XL16i & XL:20i look for a comfort specialist dealer.
thanks for the nice comment energy_rater
And your suggestion about my placing location in my profile.
Only one thing I can add to tigerdunes info is to get a reputable contractor that has a history of doing quality installations because the efficiency and lifespan of a unit will be greatly increased with a good install and likewise both will be greatly reduced with a poor install.
