walk-in freezer not enough freeze

walki-in freezer not getting below 10 F, need to get below zero. Block of ice on inside evap., (I don't work on units, I just see that things run the way they should) what should I be looking for tech to do or maybe tell me (don't want to get hoo-doo'd) thanks

Tech should tell you he's gonna de-ice the coil, and then do so.

Tech should be looking for the cause of freeze up.

Is that the same thing as "hood-winked"?


First you should shut the power off to the system and melt that ice on the evaporator. Just don't get rid of the ice in the back. You will find it all the way through the evaporator coil.

Second, clean your condenser coil.

Third, start it back up if it ices up again then you may want to take a chance on a Hoo-doo.

If you aren't familiar with a refrigeration system you may add insult to injury.

ok, another thing, lines going to units outside ice up all the way to the compressor....set for defrost 4 times day (24hrs) for 20 minutes. also, how much effect would the block of ice have on the freezing ability (ignorant of the facts but want to understand)

Defrost settings depend on your unit.

Size
Refrigerant
Product and so on.


Ice on the line set comes from several factors. Could be the evap coil building ice or could be a charge adjustment needed or a superheat issue causing it to frost back. If it gets back to the compressor then you are compressing liquid instead of gas... that's very bad.

If the evap coil is cleared from the ice and the suction line still frosts up back to the compressor... call a refrigeration pro.

Start with the basics -

Get all the ice off everything by some non-damaging means.

Clean the indoor coil and the outdoor coil well by some non-damaging means.

Re-start the system and see how the box temp is then.

One other thing - Don't wait for it to get better - it never does. If it's broke (Not working right) Fix it!!

You mean I cant use a hammer or ice pick or cresent wrench,screwdriver
to clear the ice.
